“Sometimes surgery is the only answer,” says Dr. Leonard Cerullo, M.D. “Those times are relatively few and far between, particularly when we’re talking about spinal disease, spinal degeneration – things that most people experience.”
Dr. Cerullo, a pioneering neurosurgeon, has developed a holistic, patient-centered approach to pain management. The Len Cerullo Method designs personalized treatment plans that combine western medicine and eastern therapies to establish lasting lifestyle changes and healthy habits. Dr. Cerullo and his team work with patients as individuals, incorporating options such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and physical and occupational therapy to alleviate pain and promote lifelong wellness – avoiding surgery unless it is absolutely necessary.
Dr. Cerullo emphasizes that every patient’s case is distinct, and should be treated with personalized attention. Each care plan must begin with the patient’s understanding and input. The team then proposes an initial treatment, monitoring results, and modifying the approach as needed. And if all other treatment options have been exhausted, the team will then consider surgery, helping the patient select the ideal healthcare facility and exploring recovery long-term possibilities.
It’s important, explains Dr. Cerullo, for patients not to feel helpless or hopeless about their condition, even when surgery is called for.
“At the end of the day, just because you had one heart attack, that doesn’t mean you’re going to die of a heart attack,” says Dr. Cerullo. “Just because you had one stroke, that doesn’t mean you’re going to die of a stroke. Just because you have a back problem, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be invalid because of your back problem. It means that you have a new challenge that you and I – and we – have to face.”
